10/19/2023 0 Comments Steam refund windowMore From Kotaku Australiaīut if it’s present, it will be abused! Right? While it’s unclear how this issue will reshape Steam’s refund policy in the future, it does present an important case to reconsider how refunds work on the platform. Not only does it devalue the game, it also disheartens developers and invalidates the narrative power and potential of shorter games. Short games are great, and there’s no reason why gamers should be able to play through an entire game and refund it once they’re done. At this stage, it’s unlikely to be approved by Steam but it does highlight a very important issue for games on Steam. The game’s description is as follows: “Watch a timer count to 2 hours and quit within the last 5 seconds for an achievement”. To prove just how strange this policy is, Messex followed up this review by submitting a ‘joke’ game to Steam called Refund This Game, priced at $US99.99 ($126). What’s more complicated is how easily Steam processes refunds for short games. Yes, it’s selfish to ask for a refund on a game you played, finished and loved - but it’s easy to understand why it happens. Life’s been tough over the last year and money is tight for everyone. Now, asking for a refund is understandable. But the unfortunate nature of Steam’s refund policy means these games are at the mercy of consumers, and rely on their goodwill to avoid refunds. They all deserve a chance to shine on the platform. Journey comes to mind, as does SUPERHOT and Gone Home. Steam is filled with great, short games - and there’s plenty of fantastic narratives that can be told within the two hour mark required for a refund. Regardless, it’s the loophole itself that’s the issue. IF you have concerns about liking a game or not either research or do not buy the title until the price is right.Steam Is Still Selling Disco Elysium And The Government Doesn’t Seem To Care I feel the 2 hour limit is fine for every game Cyberpunk included as refund is not meant to replace a demo but rather to ensure the game runs smoothly and gives you a small amount of troubleshooting time if it does not. I guess my conclusion if you made it this far or do not want to read my wall of text and controversial message is To be totally candid and I'm sure controversial I wish Valve would deny any and all refunds that are simply I don't like this game and remove that from the refund options but they are the better man with that then I am. The fact they even have a refund policy is a lot more then can be said about most physical stores games and digital storefronts where once the game is unboxed or a key redeemed it is just non refundable. I am sure I am in the minority but I still operate under the mentality that my games non refundable upon purchase. Rather it is meant to cover a user in event of early technical problems and troubleshooting which 2 hours is plenty for the troubleshooting and to ensure the game runs smoothly. The 2 hour window is not and never was meant to be used as a way to be able to trial a game and decide I dont want to play this. Sure it wont be long enough for many games to get a feel but I am of the opinion that if you are concerned about a game then you have the ability to research or wait until the price is at a point you are more comfortable paying. In my personal opinion 2 hours is quite generous a time as a blanket time especially as people still do abuse it to refund some shorter games which would only increase if more time was allowed. They cant set it varied based on certain games or it would be much too confusing to know which games were under which hours policies. Instead of making up excuses because you're over the refund limit, ask CDPR to give your money back and remember how this game and No Man Sky turned out next time you're preordering the new a AAA hype-fueled game. "The game is 100h long" isn't a good excuse for not doing some research, especially seeing the delays and review embargo the game had.īut I guess gamers can't say "Yeah, maybe I shouldn't have blindly preordered this game", god forbid they take some responsibility. Playing cyberpunk for 5 hours hardly gets you into this game and wouldn’t be considered abuse in any mind of a normal person who understands the length of this game. "The automatic refund reason doesn't matter because it's probably feedback for the developers: you could write "My dog pooped at the sight of this game" as a refund reason and still get your money back because you're within the refund limit." That option means all the people saying the 2 hours is not meant to try it are either wrong or steam is contradicting its own policy. Not to mention the fact that steam has a return reason of “ its not fun”.
